Title: John Piper Abstract Landscape Reference: 01689 Description: An original John Piper abstract landscape watercolour and gouache. John Piper (1903-1992) is unique among 20th century British artists, no other artist since Turner has done more to celebrate the British landscape & it's architecture. John Egerton Christmas Piper was born in Epsom Surrey and showed a keenness for art at an early age & a particular interest in landscape & architecture. In 1927 he entered the Richmond School of Art & a year later the Royal College of Art. The early 30's saw him forming friendships with such artists as Henry Moore, Ivon Hitchens, Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth & Paul Nash.
At the outbreak of the Second World War, Piper was commissioned by the 'war artists' scheme' to capture the affects of the war on the British landscape. The devastation of the Blitz was easily assimilated to Piper's personal interest in old ruined buildings. During these years he travelled the country, capturing the atmosphere of places. In 1944 he was appointed Official War Artist.
A versatile artist, Piper also wrote articles on art and architecture and designed stained glass windows for a number of buildings including the new Coventry Cathedral.

Title: Royo Limited Edition Silkscreen Reference: 01688 Description: A Jose Royo Serigraph (Silkscreen), "Todas las Luces Del Dia". Born in 1941 in Valencia, Spain, Royo began demonstrating his artistic talent early. At 14 he entered the San Carlos Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Valencia and at 18 he continued his artistic studies with Aldolfo Ferrer Amblat, Chairman of Art Studies at the San Carlos Academy. During the mid-60's-early 70's Royo added more dimensions to his skills creating theatre sets and doing graphic illustration and restoration work. At the age of 25 Royo began feeling a growing desire to paint the land of his birth; to convey the light, the color and the intensity of Valencia and the Mediterranean. Through the 1980's Royo perfected his style of painting the Mediterranean and exhibited abroad. Beginning in 1989 and continuing until today we see the development of Royo's "matured" style, his dramatic use of color and "texturing" capture his subject matter with unique flair. Parallels can be drawn to the work of the European masters; for example, with Royo's "homage to the female form," we see the distinct influence of Renoir.
