Title: Oil on Board by Vincent Lines

Reference: 01328

Description: 'Margaret Fisher Prout on the terrace in the South of France" oil on board by Vincent Lines. Vincent Lines (1909 1968)was a prolific and talented topographical watercolourist, with an intimate knowledge of the countryside, which he recorded on the spot, in the open air. He studied at Dulwich and Central School of Arts. In 1928 he was awarded a scholarship to the Royal College of Art, where the principal, William Rothenstein described him as one of the best students of the painting school. While only in his twenties, he was appointed principal of Horsham School of Art and later became principal of Hasting School of Art. His observational compositions ensured that he was a chosen artist for the Recording Britain project to which he contributed twenty watercolours. He was a close friend of Thomas Hennell and the pair of them painted together in the countryside around Hennells home at Ridley, near Meopham in Kent. A regular exhibitor at the major London galleries, his work is in the British Council collection.
