Title: Ray Marshall, Bridgefoot Pottery Vase

Reference: 00364

Description: A Studio Pottery Vase, from Ray Marshall's Bridgefoot Pottery. The vase has incised combing decoration on a gray/green oatmeal glaze. Ray Marshall (1913-1986) was born in Canada and settled in England after the Second World War. He studied at Guildford School of Art and Royal College of Art in London. In 1946 he joined Ray Finch at Winchcombe. He set up Milland Pottery in Hampshire in 1948 and then Bridgefoot Pottery, Stedham, Sussex, in 1952. In 1957 he left Milland Pottery and continued on his own at Bridgefoot Pottery, He was known for oatmeal glazes & impressing, combing & incising of which this vase is a great example, the design of the combing also shows the Winchcombe influence. His work is exhibited in the Victoria and Albert Museum. Impressed mark to base

Title: Owen Thorpe Studio Pottery Jug

Reference: 01691

Description: A charming studio pottery jug by Owen Thorpe. Owen Thorpe makes highly decorated individual pieces using a technique like majolica but at stoneware temperatures, tin glazes are employed. This jug is from his time at Churchstoke Pottery, Powys. Pottery and potters impressed marks at base of handle. c. 1981-2003

Title: Marianne De Trey Slab Vase

Reference: 1690

Description: A Slab Studio Pottery Vase by Marianne De Trey. Marianne de Trey studied textile design at the Royal College of Art and then in 1938 she married Sam Haile and they went to the USA where he taught her to pot. They returned to England in 1944 and worked together at Bulmers Brickyard in Sudbury, Suffolk. In 1947 they took over Shinner's Bridge Pottery in Dartington, Devon from Bernard Leach, but a year later Sam was killed in a road accident and Marianne carried on at Shinner's Bridge alone, and was later host to the Dartington Pottery Training Workshop. She successfully ran the pottery for over three decades producing domestic ware in parallel with individual work and in 1980 she retired to concentrate on personal, one-off pieces, mainly in porcelain. There are many examples of her work in the studio pottery collection of the V&A Museum London. Potters impressed mark.

Title: Studio Pottery Cup & Saucer - Clee Pottery

Reference: 01136

Description: A delightful cup & saucer from Clee Pottery. Tony Clee started potting in 1958 in Kent, then started his own studio pottery, Clee Pottery in Eton, Windsor where he remained for over 30 years until he retired to Cornwall. The cup and saucer are in an olive green glaze, with a combed wave design on the cup, in the style of Michael Cardew. Both the cup and saucer have an impressed Clee Pottery mark.

Title: St Ives Standard Ware Stewpot

Reference: 01686

Description: A very good example of the wonderful pottery produced by the St Ives Leach Pottery as part of the St Ives Standard Ware Range, which has improved with age. A St Ives Pottery catalogue from the 1940's describes a similar dish as a 'Stewpot with Lugs'. In 1920 Bernard Leach (1897-1979) and Shoji Hamada, set up a pottery at St Ives in Cornwall. The pottery was home to a succession of students and apprentices that almost comprise a complete who's who of studio pottery, including Michael Cardew. The “Standard Ware” range was started in the late 1930's and all members of the pottery, including Bernard and his son’s David & Michael, helped in its production. Standard Ware continued to be made until Bernard's death it was sold at some of London's stores including Liberty and John Lewis.

Title: David Frith, Brookhouse Pottery, Vase

Description: A delightful small vase by David Frith, Brookhouse Pottery. David and Margaret Frith set up their first workshop, David Frith Pottery, in 1963 and then in 1975 bought the Malt House in Denbigh and changed the pottery's name to Brookhouse. Their reputations are well established with David Frith being one of the most respected of Britain's active potters. David, with his mastery of the potter's wheel, makes majestic pieces decorated with his personal style of waxed motifs under heavy reduction overglazes and glaze trailing. Margaret concentrates on individual porcelain with carved decoration. Pottery mark to base.

Title: Owen Thorope Studio Pottery Bowl

Description: A most attractive studio pottery bowl by Owen Thorope. Owen Thorope makes highly decorated individual pieces using a technique like majolica but at stoneware temperatures, tin glazes are employed, some tinted cream or light blue with elaborate brushed patterns applied to the unfired glaze, on occasions he also adds calligraphy to this process. This dish has the statement "Well; put it all off until tomorrow; You can do something about everything then" a sentiment shared by many! Signed to base

Title: Arne Bang Candlestick

Reference: 01233

Description: An Arne Bang Studio Ribbed stoneware candlestick made by Arne Bang (1901-83),Denmark. Mottled green and brown glaze. Arne Bang designed stoneware pieces for Holmegaard in the 1920's and 30's. In 1932 he opened his own workshop and studio and produced his ceramics until 1951. Painted monogram and model number 133. c. 1930's/40's.

Title: Early David Leach, Aylesford Coffee Pot

Reference: 01664

Description: An well potted studio pottery coffee pot produced at Aylesford Pottery, during the period it was run by David Leach, Oatmeal glaze. In 1954 David Leach set up the Aylesford Priory Pottery for the Friars. He stayed for a year, teaching pottery to the monks, and then handed over managership to Colin Pearson. Early Aylesford Pottery impressed mark, c. 1954-56. In good condition ,no chips,cracks or restoration, a few nibbles on the inner support for the lid,unseen when lid on.
